Egypt, Jordan, France Urge Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza
Amid escalating tensions in Gaza, the leaders of Egypt, France, and Jordan have urgently called on the international community to restore an immediate ceasefire. During a tripartite summit held in Cairo, the heads of state expressed deep concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation affecting Palestinians and stressed the need to ensure full access to humanitarian aid.
The joint statement emphasized the importance of implementing the ceasefire agreement signed in January 2024, underscoring that protecting civilians and humanitarian workers is an obligation under international humanitarian law. This message comes at a critical time as Gaza’s population faces dire conditions.
The leaders also addressed the worsening situation in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, demanding an end to unilateral measures that threaten to undermine prospects for a two-state solution. They highlighted the need to respect the historical status quo of holy sites in Jerusalem and rejected any attempts to forcibly displace Palestinians.
Additionally, the document stressed the importance of international support for Gaza’s reconstruction plan, approved at the recent Arab Summit. The leaders announced their intent to solidify these efforts at an upcoming conference in June, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, aimed at outlining a clear political path toward implementing the two-state solution.
This joint declaration not only reflects concern over Gaza’s humanitarian crisis but also seeks to revive international dialogue on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict—a historically complex and sensitive issue. The call for an immediate ceasefire is framed as a crucial step to alleviate civilian suffering and advance a peaceful, lasting resolution in the region.
